Irvin R. "Buck" Buchanan, Jr., 76 of Waco passed away on Friday June 29, 2007, at a local hospital. Visitation will be 1 pm on Saturday at OakCrest Funeral Home followed by a Memorial Service at 2 pm officiated by Jimmy Dorrell.
Buck was born October 27, 1930 in Perryton, Texas to Irvin R. and Lucile (Underwood) Buchanan, Sr. He grew up working in the wheat fields of the Texas Panhandle and ranching in Arkansas City, Arkansas. He graduated from Baylor University in 1952 in the first class of adverting majors. At Baylor he met his wife to be, Dorothy (Dottie) Smith; they married June 26, 1953.
After graduation he worked for Waco's Jr. Chamber of Commerce. He served in the Army stationed at Ft Ord, CA, returning to Waco in 1955.
He worked in advertising and sales promotions. He started an advertising agency in 1967; most known in Waco as Buchanan Advertising. While in Baylor he was in Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. Service to his community was a life long commitment. He is known in Waco for his service to his community, faith, family, neighbors and friends. He was active in the Waco Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, President of the Advertising Club of Waco, Board President of Camp Fire Girls (now Camp Fire USA) where he especially loved helping with Camp Val Verde. He was a leader at Highland Baptist Church. In retirement he helped Lake Shore Baptist with community projects and the Waco Historical Foundation. He was a loyal friend and a loving husband, father, and grandfather who provided and loved his family up until the day of his death.
Buck was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty Dubberley.
Buck is survived by his wife, Dottie of Waco; daughters, Dottie Kaye Phillips and husband Mark of Flower Mound, Lois Bevan and husband David of Grass Valley, CA and Betsy Vandever and husband Ronnie of Kingwood; grandchildren, Ashley Phillips, Laura Vandever, Drew Phillips and Alexandria Bevan; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
