James D. Johnson, 67, of McGregor formerly of Mathis, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at his residence. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel with the pastor Tom Clark of Grace Temple Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Rosemound Cemetery. A meal will be served at Grace Temple Baptist Church at 3825 Bosque Blvd. for family and friends following the service. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at OakCrest Funeral Home.
James was born February 20, 1935 in Waco to Buford Willis and Jewell Reed Johnson. He attended Waco Schools and enlisted in the Army August 1954. He took basic training at Fort Bliss and served with the 42nd Triple A Battalion in Germany. James was discharged July 31, 1956 in Texas. James retired in February 1995 after 20 plus years as a dragline operator for San Patricio County. He was known to catch large Drum along the bays of the Coastal Bend and an avid fisherman on Lake Corpus Christi.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ishmael of McGregor whom he married June 30, 1964 in Durant, Oklahoma; stepdaughter, Emailee Taylor of Fayetville, Arkansas; stepson, Freddie Holland of Waco; sisters, Geneva Ryter of Waco, Dorothy Whitaker of Elmont and Carolyn Johnson of Brownsville, Tenn. and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
