James Joseph "Jim" Leftwich
February 3, 1929 - March 27, 2012
James Joseph "Jim" Leftwich, 83, of Hewitt, passed away at his home surrounded by his family.
Services with full military honors will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012 at the Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel.
Visitation with the family will be 6 pm to 8 pm Wednesday, March 28th at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Boulevard.
Jim was born February 3, 1929 to Virgil Leftwich and O'Beda DeRue in Waco, the oldest of three children. Jim joined the US Coast Guard in 1943 at the age of 14, later retiring as a Lieutenant JG after serving his country for 22 years.
Jim attended the University of Texas and University of Hawaii later going to work at the Texas Highway Dept. as an Engineer and leaving there to become the company pilot for McAx in McGregor.
Jim's love of the sea took him back to school attending the Masters, Mates and Pilot Academy in Baltimore, MD. Upon on graduation, Jim went back to the sea joining Keystone Shipping and Sabine Towing and Transportation transporting oil and chemicals to different parts of the country. He finally retired as a Captain in the Merchant Marines in 1994.
Preceeded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jack and Keith Leftwich; and great granddaughter, Jolie Elizabeth Duncan.
Survived by the love of his life, Mamie and their children, Deborah Deaton, Johnny Williams and wife, Jennifer, Terry Carrier and husband, Steve and Judy Karcher. Grandchildren: John "Scooter" Parker, Stephen Duncan, Jennifer Muns and husband Chris, Chris Williams, Charlie Moore and wife Kim, Samantha Karcher and friend Pat Mosely and Bradley Carrier. Great Grandchildren: Jacie Grace and Jillian Kate Duncan and Jeven Christopher and Jaylea Camryn Muns. Sister Barbara Pinter and brother and sisters in law Barbara Ingram, Frances White and husband, J. W., Florene Roberts, Tran Malone of Birmingham, AL and Debbie Leftwich of Oklahoma City, OK.
