James "Jake" D. McCarty, Jr., 94, of Waco, educator, hunter and fisherman, received his final call to go home to the Lord, Thursday, August 28, 2008.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel, 4520 Bosque Blvd. with a reception following the service in the funeral home's great room.
Jake was born to James D. McCarty, Sr. and Emma Pricilla Bunt McCarty on October 31, 1913. He resided for all his 94 years in his birth city of Waco, Texas.
Jake graduated from Waco High School in 1933 and went on to get a BS degree in biology and chemistry and a Masters of Arts in Education degree from Baylor University. Jake also completed two summers of post graduate work at the University of Texas in Austin. He financed his collegiate years by doing plumbing, electrical and maintenance work at Baylor. One of his favorite stories centers around his work on the chimes of Pat Neff Hall.
Jake taught Spanish at Aquila High School. He taught biology, chemistry, physics and driver's education at McGregor High School for over 25 years. After retiring from teaching, he stayed busy hunting, fishing and telling "tall tales".
Jake married the love of his life, Virginia E. Land of Eclectic, Ala. on May 28, 1937. Virginia was a true belle of the Deep South and captured his heart at first glance while with her sister at Cameron Park. They were married for 69 years and had four children. Jake was a loyal husband and devoted father. They attended North Waco Baptist Church.
Jake was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Jimmie and Donna Marie; seven sisters, Olive Black, Ada White, Thelma Sanders, Myrtle Chaddock, Ethel Odinot, Irene McCarty and Italyne McCarty.
He is survived by his son, David Allan McCarty and wife, Kathy of Kyle, Texas; daughter, Cindy Dian Bethany and husband, James R. Bethany of China Spring; grandchildren, Lonny James Bethany of Houston, Evan Michael McCarty and Heather Murita McCarty of Temple.
