.
Jim was born September 17, 1948 in Waco, Texas to James C. and Edith Matthews Tountas. He graduated from Richfield High School in 1966. It was in his senior year there that he first became involved in what would be his life-long vocation. He had never played a band instrument until he picked up a tuba to become part of the Richfield marching band. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in music education from Abilene Christian College in 1971.
Jim spent most of his life until he retired as a band director for junior highs and high schools in central and west Texas. In addition to being a teacher, he was also an accomplished writer/arranger with several of his arrangements being recorded by the Texas Tech band during his time in Lubbock.
When he wasn’t teaching you could find him involved in music in other ways. He owned a recording business in Lubbock which specialized in recordings for school music programs and worked with music stores selling and servicing band instruments. After he moved home to the Waco area, he was active in the Waco Community Band for many years.
At the time of his death, he was an active member of Chapter 59 of the Experimental Aircraft Association based at McGregor Executive Airport. He attended Columbus Avenue Church of Christ when residing in Waco.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, James C Tountas, on November 27, 2014.
He is survived by his mother, Edith Tountas of Waco; brother, Bob Tountas and wife Janie of College Station; niece, Brice Waldron and husband Tommy and their children Tate and Sloane of Sugar Land; nephew, Rob Tountas of College Station; aunts, Alma Tountas and Sally Richardson; as well as numerous cousins.
Memorials may be made to Columbus Avenue Church of Christ or the charity of your choice.
