Jean Reeves

Jean M. Reeves, 90, of Woodway, formerly of Hurley, New Mexico, died August 3, 2009 at a local nursing facility. She will be interred at Ft. Bayard National Cemetery in southwestern New Mexico, beside her huband, following graveside services.

Mrs. Reeves was born May 9, 1919 in Brownfield, Texas, the only child of C.E. and Bertie Martin. She attended schools in Lamesa, Texas, graduating from Lamesa High School. She later studied at Texas Tech University.

She married Paul Reeves on November 18, 1941 and after his discharge from the U.S. Army Air Corps, they moved to Hurley, New Mexico where they resided until May, 2003 when they moved to Woodway to be close to family.

During the wartime years, she was employed as a telephone operator for the Bell System and in Hurley, she worked as a substitute school teacher for several years.

Mrs. Reeves was a lifelong Southern Baptist, most recently belonging to Woodway First Baptist Church, attending a senior adult Sunday School class until physically disabled. She was active in the Women's Missionary Union at the local, associational and state levels in New Mexico and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years.

Mrs. Reeves was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-two years and her parents.

She is survived by her only child, Kay Furman and son-in-law, Glenn of Harris Creek; grandsons, K. Blaine Furman and wife, Shawna of McGregor, Barry Furman and wife, Jennifer of Houston; granddaughter, Trista Orsak and husband, Ryan of Centennial, Colorado; three great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Weston Furman and Peter Orsak; a beloved niece, Dorothy Page and husband, Weldon of Brownwood, Texas; one brother­in-law, four sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

The family thanks Dr. Steven Raley, Bluebonnet Hospice and Regent Care Center staffs for their compassionate care of Mrs. Reeves during her last years.

Memorials may be made to Woodway First United Methodist Church Oasis Project or the Baptist Children's Home in Portales, New Mexico.
