Jeanie Mercer

Norma Jean “Jeanie” Wilson Mercer, 84, of Woodway, Texas passed away December 22, 2017. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation with the family is one hour prior to the service She was born August 26, 1933, in Abilene, Texas, to John Denton Wilson and Amy Ione McCullough Wilson. She married the love of her life, Bert Lewis Mercer, on September 28, 1951. They were married for 66 years. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Mark Mercer of Waco, and David Mercer and wife Sylvia of Orlando, FL; one daughter, Amy Mercer Enoch of Denton, TX; beloved sons-in-law Roger Daw and David Enoch; eight grandchildren: Cheverly Long and husband Larry, Daniel Mercer and Maryam, Jeannie Daw, Emily Daw Boyle and husband Aaron, Jonathan Mercer, Joshua Mercer, Mary Enoch, and Leah Enoch; one great-grandchild, Autumn Louther; and many extended family members and beloved friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sister Billie Ruth Wilson; and her daughter Mary Annette Mercer Daw.

As the wife of a long-time Church of Christ pulpit minister, Mrs. Mercer was herself a deeply faithful and Biblically knowledgeable Christian who taught numerous Bible classes and authored two books geared to women’s studies. She was an immensely talented and prolific writer, a lover of words, who for many years was on the Board of Contributors of the Waco Tribune-Herald, producing hundreds of articles on every subject from family to faith.

Fluent in sign language, Mrs. Mercer also interpreted for the deaf, often being the sole interpreter for entire church worship services. She was also a highly skilled seamstress, typist, and classical pianist.

Though she was not widely known for it, she had a wicked and sharp sense of humor. As almost always the quietest person in a room full of noisy, laughing family, she could throw out the funniest and most unexpected wisecrack of all.

Jeanie Mercer was loved and admired by all who knew her, and her loss is and will be deeply felt.
