Joan Eileen Painter died peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Good Friday, March 25, 2016. She was a resident of Waco for 44 years. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 27th from 2 PM to 4 PM at OakCrest Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at Highland Baptist Church on Monday, March 28th at 1 PM. A graveside service will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Joan Painter was born on June 16, 1934, in Houston, Texas, the daughter of Frank Eugene Balajka and Noma Moore Balajka. She earned a B.A. in Religion and Music from TCU, an M.A. in Education from East Texas University, and did further graduate work in Special Education at Pan Am University.
Joan was married to Robert Glen Painter for 63 years, during which time she enjoyed the role of minister's wife at Trinity Church and The Church of the Good Shepherd in Waco. She also taught school in a number of places, including Vanguard College Preparatory School, and worked 10 years at the law firm of
Naman, Howell, Smith and Lee.
Joan was a gifted musician, writer, genealogist, painter, and lover of books and nature. Most of all she was a woman of faith and prayer who loved people and was devoted to her family.
Joan Painter was preceded in death by her parents and her grandson, Joshua David Risinger. In addition to her husband Robert Painter, survivors include sons Jon Mark Painter (of Raton, New Mexico), and Luke Edward Painter and his wife Michelle Dedman (of Corvallis, Oregon); daughter Sara Lynn Risinger and her husband Dr. David Risinger (of Waco); brother Johnny Balajka (of Dallas); niece Holli Balajka Cruse and her husband Clay, son Aden, and daughter Kylie (of Dallas); and five grandchildren: Ashley Nicole Smith (of Venice, California); James Painter Roberts and his wife Lori (of Grand Junction, Colorado); and Kristen Risinger, Jacob Risinger, and Kelly Burleson and husband Brandt (of Waco).
The family is grateful to Gay and Laura of Providence Hospice for the kind and tender care they gave Joan in her final days.
