Joe was born in Waco to Joe and Hallie (Frazier) Goddard. He graduated from Waco High and attended Baylor University. He proudly served in the Marines in the Pacific theatre during WWII.
In 1951, Joe married his first wife, Dorothy Ruby, who preceded him in death in 1992. He retired in 1991 as vice president of Home State County Mutual.
He was a charter member of Richfield Christian Church and presently a member of Central Christian Church where he served as an elder, deacon and greeter. He was an avid fisherman and was a member of the Waco Gem and Mineral Club.
He is fondly remembered as a loving father and husband, and a devout Christian. He thought of everyone else's needs first, and was a friendly, caring person who never met a stranger. He loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 10 years, Helen Sherman Goddard; daughters, Debbie Schlemmer and husband, Larry of Hewitt, Nancy Jones of Waco, and Ruthie Goddard of West; step-son, Sherman Steig and wife, Kelly of Dallas; grandchildren, Jason Coffey and wife, Jamie of Mexia, and Rebecca Jones of Waco; great-grandchildren, Jason Coffey Jr. and Madeline Coffey of Mexia; and honorary daughter, Linda Westphal of Waco.
Honorary pallbearers are John Westmoreland, Carl Johnson, Truman Bigham, Bill Jones, Bill Fuller, Wallace Capps, Tom Falls, and Ralph Lee.
The family thanks the Hillcrest ICU nurses; Hillcrest Hospice, especially Charla Hughes; and Dr. Spain and Dr. Myers.
Memorials may be made to the Richfield Christian Church Building Fund or the Central Christian Church Memorial Fund.
