Joe Read Goodman, Sr., 87, of Waco, passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at his residence. A graveside service will be held Friday, November 20 at 2 p.m. at Frost Cemetery in Frost, Texas. Visitation will be Thursday, November 19 from 6 – 8 p.m. at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. in Waco.
Joe was born October 31, 1928 in Mertens, Texas to Sallie Mae (Thomas) and Frank Cecil Goodman. He graduated from Mertens High School. After graduation he worked for Brown and Root Pipeline. Joe served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. In 1957, he began his career with Texas Department of Public Safety, working in Driver’s License Services in Houston, Bryan and Waco. After 31 years, he retired as a Trooper 4. Joe was a Deacon at Westwood Baptist Church and was also a Mason. He loved his church and enjoyed reading his Bible every day. He also loved to fish and especially enjoyed watching his great-grandchildren play in their various sports activities. Joe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed.
Preceding Joe in death were his parents, 3 sisters, a niece and a nephew.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty; children, Deborah Smith and husband Harvey, Joe Read Goodman, Jr. and wife Sherrie and Marianne Scarborough; grandchildren, Carolyn Cole, Christopher Smith, Cherie Cummings, Marcus Lowe, Nicholas Lowe, and Rebekah Pope; 9 great-grandchildren and one on the way.
