Joseph L. (Joe) Orlando, 93, passed away Sunday, February 17, 2013. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 at the OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel with Monsignor Mark Deering officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service.
Joe was born in Marlin to Josephine (Giaratino) and Cosimo Orlando. He was in the US Army from 1941 until 1945, serving in Europe and Africa. Returning home after the War, he married Viola DeMaria, and they owned and operated a grocery store for the next 35 years, where he was known as "Mr. Joe, the peacemaker".
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Waco, the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion, where for years, he helped run their weekly Bingo games.
Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Jasper; sisters, Dora, Irene, Viola, Ann and Elsie; and a beloved son, David Lynn in 1959.
He is survived by Viola, his loving wife of 67 years; a devoted daughter, Linda Orlando Littlewood and son-in-law, Harry Littlewood, and by some very dear nieces and nephews.
Many thanks to the caring devotion of Uni Murphy, Linda Barber and the many nurses and aids, who came into his life in his last years.
All who knew Joe were touched by his gentle nature, kind heart and friendly smile. He enjoyed his morning coffee and paper, mowing yards, feeding birds. And the word was out among the neighborhood animals knowing they'd have luck finding food out for them at Joe's door. He will be truly missed.
When you are sorrowful, look again in your heart and you will see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
In lieu of flowers, please give to the animal shelter of your choice.
