The Rev. John James Cole, 90, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 17, 2007 at his home in Waco. The service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at OakCrest Funeral Home with the Rev. Drew Wilson and the Rev. David Shuttlesworth officiating. The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Morgan Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.

John was born August 19, 1916 at Morgan, the eldest of four sons whose parents were William H. Cole and Ada Rundell Cole. John graduated from Morgan High School in 1933. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University in 1939 and a Master of Theology Degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1944. He married Lora Marie Bain in 1942 and to this union was born two children, Paula Elaine and James Elbert.

John was pastor of half-time churches in Milam and Bell counties while attending the seminary and served six churches during his ministry: Ropesville, Texas, and Las Vegas, Fort Sumner, Clovis and Santa Fe, New Mexico. His last church was a fourteen-year ministry at First Southern Baptist Church in San Luis Obispo, California. He retired in 1981 and he and his first wife Marie spent several years traveling in their RV across the USA and Canada. From 1986 to 1991 he made his home in Meridian and since 1991, has lived in Waco and was a member of the First Baptist Church for nine years.

In April of 2000, John married Dot McGraw. At that time, John moved his membership to Park Lake Drive Baptist Church where he was engaged in many activities. He and Dot were also members of the Baylor Senior Choir. For the past three years John served as President of the Retired Ministers Fellowship of the Waco Regional Baptist Network.

Preceding him in death were his first wife, Marie, and one brother, William Harold Cole.

Surviving him are his wife, Dorothy McGraw Cole, and his two children and their spouses, Paula and Alan Simon of Midland, and Jim and Pam Cole of Katy; grandchildren, Randy and Meg Simon of Boise, Idaho, Jeremy and Kelli Lederman of Katy, Terry Cole of Lompoc, California; and twin great-grandsons, Cooper James and Finley David Simon. Also surviving are his wife Dot's children and grandchildren, Bill and Sherry McGraw of Cincinnati, Ohio, Charlotte Bowling, Bryan and Rachel Bowling, and Kevin Bowling of Waco; John's two brothers and their wives, Carl and Betty Cole of San Diego, California, and Paul and Sarah Cole of Houston, and many other relatives and good friends.

John's family would like to express their sincere gratitude and thanks to doctors and nurses at Providence Hospital, St. Catherine's Care Center, and Providence Hospice for their loving care of John for the past three weeks. A special thank you to hospice nurses Stephanie Conner and Wilda Fowler, and caregiver, Chris Spanos, who went beyond the call of duty to care for John and the family during his illness. Also a special thank you is given to his family and many friends who prayed for John and the family during his illness.
