John G. (Popo) Gonzales, 86, of Waco, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2009. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, September 3 at St. Francis Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Rosary will be 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 2 at OakCrest Funeral Home followed by visitation.
John was born May 27, 1923 in Rosebud to Nicanor and Margarita Gonzales. John proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII in the 684th Ordnance Ammunition Company while in Italy and North Africa. He also served in the Civilian Conservation Corp from 1941 to 1942.
He retired with over 27 years of employment and dedicated service to the Waco V A Medical Center and Wolfe's Manufacturing where he worked part time for 27 years.
John loved his wife and family very much. His favorite past times were spent listening to all types of music and reading. He also enjoyed tinkering with electronics, working on cars and solving crossword puzzles. He was a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys. His weekend hobby was setting up at the Flea Market and visiting with his many friends. John was a firm believer in a good breakfast as he always wanted to cook breakfast for his entire family. He will be greatly missed by his loving family. His passing will leave a big void in our family, but we will cherish our fond memories of our precious Popo.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charlie Gonzales; and a special brother-in-law, Andrew Macias.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Eloise (Loisa Tovar) Gonzales; three sons, Johnny Gonzales, Jr. and wife, Gloria, Michael Gonzales and Nicky Gonzales and wife, Lisa; one daughter, Ana Salinas and husband, Eloy. He helped raise two grandchildren, Anissa Herrera and Michael (Mikey) Gonzales, Jr.; and great-grandson, Christopher Gonzales. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and 14 great great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Ballesteros and husband, Tom, Josie Quintanilla and husband, Dan; and his brother, Louis Gonzales and wife, Dolores.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Gonzales, Jr., John Paul Gonzales, Michael (Mikey) Gonzales, Jr., Enrique (Rico) Salinas, Raymond Tovar, Christopher Gonzales, Johnny Ray Chavez and Alexander Jay (A.J.) Alvarez.
