John was born in Waco to Alex and LaVerne McDonald, and has lived here all of his life. He married Eva Samaniego on April 3, 1976 in Waco, and they lived a happy life together.

For the past 11 years, he has been employed at Whataburger, Inc. where he had most recently achieved the position of Project Manager.
