Jonathan A. Lindsey died April 9, 2012. A memorial service at Seventh and James Baptist Church will be held Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. A reception will follow the service. On the preceding evening, Friday, April 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. the family will greet friends at a visitation in Harper Hall at Seventh and James Baptist Church.
Jon was born on June 9, 1937 in Bulloch County, Georgia to Ethel (Strickland) and Joel Wesley Lindsey. A native of Savannah, Georgia, he graduated from Savannah High School. Jon received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from George Washington University, Ph. D. and Master's degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and another Master's from the University of Alabama. He spent his professional life in higher education as a chaplain, administrator, and professor at Judson College, Marion, AL; Meredith College, Raleigh, NC; and Baylor University, Waco, TX. He retired from Baylor University in 2007.
Jon was a member of Seventh & James Baptist Church, Waco, where he served tirelessly in a variety of capacities. He was also involved, both in leadership and general service roles, in several local non-profit organizations and local, regional, and national professional organizations. Locally, these ranged from serving as president of the Waco Area PTA Council to volunteering as an AARP tax aide and delivering Meals on Wheels.
Always concerned about professional ethics, Jon published articles and monographs on ethics for fundraisers and for librarians, in addition to many other topics. Well known as an avid reader, he relished the opportunity to discuss books, articles, and fiction with friends and family. More recently, Jon delighted in sharing literature with his grandchildren.
Jon is survived by his wife of 47 years, Annette Loewer Lindsey; his daughter, Julianna Elizabeth, and her husband, Donald Gene Teitelbaum of Accra, Ghana; one granddaughter Campbell Annette "Campbell Ann" Okaya Teitelbaum; his son, Jonathan Edward, and his wife, Catherine Ann of Birmingham, Alabama; and two grandsons, Jackson Loewer and Parker Knox Lindsey. He is also survived by two brothers and their spouses: Lewis and Libby, of Savannah, GA, and Joel and Iris, of Fairbanks, AK, and several nieces and nephews.
