Jose Ortiz, aged 69, of Waco, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, in a Waco hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Waco Christian Fellowship Church, 405 Estates Drive, with Pastor Robert Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 10, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.
Mr. Ortiz was born Sept. 23, 1932, in Laredo. He married Sara Margarita Guerra on Jan. 5, 1957, in Laredo. They moved to Waco 45 years ago, and Mr. Ortiz worked 32 years for the Baylor University Press. After he left Baylor, he bought Budget Printing Center in Waco, which he has operated for the past 10 years with his wife, sons and daughter. He faithfully attended Waco Christian Fellowship Church, and especially enjoyed being a member of the Little Touch of Heaven Bible Bunch led by Chuck Williams.
Mr. Ortiz was a life-long Christian, a loving husband, father and grandfather, and a caring supportive friend to all he knew. Jose loved his family, friends and the Lord with all his heart. He was a mentor and father figure to many, a pillar of moral strength and virtue and had the love and respect of all who knew him. His last words to loved ones were: ''Get close to God. Talk to Him. He will listen and talk to you.''
Survivors include his wife, Sara Ortiz of Waco; two sons, Roberto Ortiz of Waco, and Jose Ortiz, Jr. (Joe) of Waco and his wife, Sarah, and two grandsons, Joseph Austin Ortiz and Matthew Sean Ortiz, both of Waco; a daughter, Mrs. Sarah Patricia Jones (Patty) of Waco and her husband, Bob Jones, and a step-grandson, John Lewis Jones of Waco and a step-granddaughter, Jennifer Leigh Jones of Waco; and his two sisters, Gloria Cardenas of Laredo and Cathy Bowen of Laredo, 11 nephews and 9 nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Pablo Ortiz, Andres Ortiz, Miguel Ortiz, and a sister, Anna Maria Ortiz.
The family will be at the home of his son, Joe Ortiz, 2200 N. 52nd Street, Waco, TX, 254-751-1482.
Pallbearers will be George Aitken, Tim Coates, James Goodnight, Homer Martinez, David Martinez and Royce Walston. Honorary Pallbearers will be Bobby Guerra, Javier Guerra, Bill Shirley, and Marvin Gobel.
