September 8, 1949 - February 12, 2021

Joseph E. Fonteneaux, Sr., 71, of Hewitt, passed away on Friday, February 12, 2021 at Baylor Scott and White Hospital surrounded by loved ones. Funeral mass will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 24 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1401 Washington Ave, Waco, TX 76701, with Father Cyril Ejaidu officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park.

A Memorial Video prepared by OakCrest Funeral Home honoring his life will be shown during visitation on Tuesday, February 23 from 5-7 p.m., and he will lie in state beginning at 12 p.m. at OakCrest Funeral Home.

Joseph was born September 8, 1949 in Houston, Texas to Albert Fonteneaux and Patsy Gums Fonteneaux. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Houston, Texas, Class of 1967. After graduation, Joseph continued his education at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he earned his baccalaureate and master's degrees.

Joseph began his teaching and coaching career at LeMoyne Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee, followed by Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas, and Waco Independent School District from which he retired. Still loving the impact of educating students, he worked at Aquilla I.S.D., where he continued to teach and coach for a brief time.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, great grandparents, one sister, LaWanda Fonteneaux, one niece, Brandy Fonteneaux, and numerous other relatives.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 51 years, Joyce, three sons, Joseph (Cynthia), Terence, and Kaleb. Joseph also leaves to celebrate his life siblings, Beven Thomas, Verona Fonteneaux (Marcus), Felix Moore (Barbara), sister in law Diane Monette (Joseph), and brother in law Eddie J. Lyons (Susanna). Very special to his heart were his grandsons, Jonathan, Christopher, William, and Alan Fonteneaux, a devoted friend of the family Timothy Lindholm, his Paul Quinn College Baseball and Women's Basketball families, and University High School Girls' Basketball and Softball teams, with a host of nieces, nephews, and other close friends and family.

Rosary at 6 p.m. Facial covering required. Social distancing will be followed. Limited seating available.

Coach Fonteneaux will be available for viewing starting at 12 pm noon Tuesday, Feb. 23, at OakCrest Funeral Home.
