Joe Stahl, 93, of Waco, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 19, 2008.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 23, 2008, at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church with Father Irudayaraj Thomas as celebrant.
The Knights of Columbus will serve as honor guards. Burial with full military honors by the Dyess Air Force Base Honor Guard will follow at Waco Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22. at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at OakCrest Funeral Home by Father Angelo Bertini. A memorial video honoring Joe's life will be shown during the visitation.
Joseph Adam (Joe) Stahl was born May 19, 1914 in Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania, to Leo and Anna (Spitzer) Stahl. He studied animal husbandry, worked as a ranch foreman in Wyoming and Arizona, flew a glider in the Pacific theater during World War II, and was a supply officer during the Berlin Airlift. He retired as an Air Force Major after 21 year of service.
He married Lucille Schreiber in 1949, and they had six children. Joe and Lucille started the Flying Heart Ranch in Waco over 40 years ago, where he taught flying lessons and operated a working ranch. During his flying career he logged over 11,000 hours and soloed 344 students.
Joe Stahl was an honest man who exemplified the independent American spirit. He never let anything slow him down. He made his first parachute jump at age 80 and was planning a second jump to celebrate his 100th birthday!
He remained involved in the community and was an active member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Experimental Aircraft Association. In 2005 he received the FAA Wright Brothers' Master Pilot Award.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille, in 2006; his parents; sisters, Marie Henderson and Catherine O'Connor; and brothers, Adrian Stahl and Gerard Stahl.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Clara Ann Norman and husband, Stephen; son, Paul and wife, Raifen; daughter, Patricia Lentz and husband, Garry; son, Albert Stahl and wife, Julie; son, Leo and wife Lucy; and daughter, Rosemary Ray and husband, Tom; sister Rita Stahl, sister, Babs Huffert, and brother Robert Stahl, 18 grandchildren, and four great- grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Robert Stahl, Paul Stahl, Albert Stahl, Leo Stahl, Stephen Norman, Garry Lentz, and Tom Ray.
