Juanita Louise Boyd, 81, died August 9, 2008 in Waco. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be 2 p.m. September 1, 2008, which would have been her 82nd birthday, at the Beacon Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Harley B. Gordon officiating. Beacon Hill is located on 1912 Monte Vista, off Bagby Ave.
She was born September 1, 1926, to Herbert M. Whitehurst and Susan Jane Arthur Whitehurst of Waco. Nita, as she was known to all, had a very full and active life.
She married Ira Walter Lovell in 1943, and had five children from that union. She married Edward B. Lyon in 1954 and had one son. In her later years, she was married to William L. "Bill" Boyd. All preceded her in death.
Nita started playing the piano as a young child and continued playing as late as 3 days before her death. It was something she loved and wanted all to share her love of music. As Crestview Manor Nursing Home put it, "She plays for birthday parties, 4th of July celebrations, Thanksgiving Day dinners; whenever we need music - she's here!"
She played at various other Nursing homes including her favorite Jeffery Place where she knew all the staff and patients. For many years she played piano and attended Beacon Hill Baptist Church.
She worked hard all her life. She worked in food for service for 25 years. She was a waitress at House of Lyons, Bertrand's, Hickory Stick, and Surf and Sirloin restaurants and truly loved her work and customers.
She worked for Waco Patrol Security for 20 years. Her job as security was at the Village Condominiums where she thought of the Baylor students as her children.
She was also preceded in death by her sisters Hattie Judson and Jane Hawkins; and brothers Herbert and Arthur Whitehurst.
She is survived by two sons, Herbert and wife, Judy Lovell of Waco, and Edward Lyon of Huntsville; four daughters, Susan Armstrong or Corinth, Texas, Sharon and husband, Bill Bounds of Shady Shores, Texas, Linda Lovell of Mesquite, Texas, and Carol and husband, Like Tular of Cedar Hill, Texas; two sisters, Jan and husband, John Denton of Dallas, and Nadine Cook of Waco; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and she leaves her best friend of 50 years, Mae Duyck of Waco.
We wish to thank Jeffery Place Nursing Home for the care extended to our mother.
