Larry Hillier

Larry Hillier, 75, of Moody, passed from this life and entered eternal rest on Thursday, April 23, 2009 after a lengthy illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, April 27 at the OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be Sunday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Larry was born August 6, 1933 in West Farmington, Ohio to Robert and Lucetta Belden Hillier. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Block Island Aircraft Carrier. He moved to California in 1958 and was a Union Painter for Mobil Oil Corp. He was also a licensed helicopter and single engine airplane pilot.

He was an accomplished musician and played the electric steel guitar for Eddie Drake and His Country Gentlemen on Los Angeles television sponsored by Cal Worthington Dodge.

During this time, he was also back up electric steel guitar player for Freddie Hart, Marty Robbins, George Jones, Lefty Frizzell, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.

Larry moved his family to Texas in 1975 and was a painter for an independent contractor on a variety of industrial contracts. He retired from the Waco Independent School District in 1995 after working for 12 years in the HVAC Department.

Larry continued to pursue his musical interest and played in a variety of local country and western bands including Blacky and The Country Gentlemen, The Texans, and Dave Mercer and the Chalk Bluff Band. Larry was a gifted musician who enjoyed performing with his fellow band members and putting on a show.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert James Hillier; his mother, Lucetta Belden Jessop; and his sister, Sally Ann Caldwell.

Larry is survived by:
his wife of 43 years, Virginia "Jenny" Hillier; 7 children, Bruce Hillier, Patrice Hillier, Jeff Hillier, Susan Hillier, Robert Hillier, Adrianne Hillier and Larry Hillier; 3 step children, Robert Roth, Carrie Tatum and Ronda Kimbrow; sister, Patricia Chaparro and husband, Edmund; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
