Lawrence Moss

After a courageous fight and surrounded by his family, Lawrence Moss, 83, of Mt. Calm, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at his residence.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 7, 2008 at the OakCrest Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Lawrence and Rev. R. B. McCurdy officiating. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 6, 2008 at OakCrest Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park.

Mr. Moss was born October 2, 1924 in Gatesville to Robert and Elizabeth Moss. He served proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II and saw action in the South Pacific. He returned to Waco and met the love of his life, LaVerne Guantt. They were married on January 22, 1946. His life revolved around her, their four children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

His work career included 32 years with the Waco Independent School District where he retired as a Maintenance Supervisor. He then worked another ten years with ARA Nursing Homes before he truly retired to his farm in Mt. Calm. There, he enjoyed his cows, chickens, ducks and donkeys.

Mr. Moss served his Lord faithfully at Park Memorial Baptist and First Baptist Church of Mt. Calm after he moved there. He served as a Deacon for over 46 years and was honored for his tireless service by his church in 2005 with the title of Deacon Emeritus and a Lawrence Moss Day ceremony.

Survivors include his wife and helpmate of 62 years, LaVerne; four children, sons and daughter-in-law, Dwain and Jeanie Moss of Waco, son Jimmy Moss of Sierra Vista, Arizona, son, Mike Moss of Mt. Calm; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Danny Guinn of Mansfield; nine grandchildren, Melissa Brown and husband, Randall of Lorena, Kevin and wife Candice of Orlando, Fla., Greg and wife, Ame of Dallas, Scott and wife, Angie of Sierra Vista, Az., Chris of Orlando, Fla., Mike Jr. and wife, Lindsey of Waco, Pam Neie and husband, Steve of Lorena , Matthew Guinn and Lauren Guinn of Mansfield; 4 great-grandchildren, Emily, Elizabeth, Madison and Hope; sister Ruby Lumpkin of Clifton. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Moss was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.

Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Scott Moss, Mike Moss, Jr., Kevin Moss, Greg Moss, Chris Moss and Matthew Guinn. Honorary pallbearers will be former co-workers, Dennis Carrizales and Wendell Jones and the Deacons of First Baptist Church of Mt. Calm.
