Retired City of Waco Fire Chief Leslie T. Summey, age 91, passed away November 25, 2010.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, December 4 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Curtis Holland officiating.
A procession to the cemetery led by the Waco Fire Department will leave the OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, December 3 at OakCrest Funeral Home.
Chief Summey was born December 10, 1918 to Thomas W. and Elizabeth Haygood Summey in Rosenthal. He lived in Robinson until the age of five and then moved to Waco with his family. He attended Waco Schools and graduated from Waco High School. He married the love of his life, his beloved wife of 70 years, Dorothy Delores Combs, on April 14, 1940.
He joined the Waco Fire Department July 1, 1942. On March 12, 1957, he was appointed Fire Chief, the position he held until he retired December 31, 1983 as the longest-serving Waco fire chief.
Mr. Summey was a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, Waco Lions Club, and Fidelis Lodge No. 1127, a lifetime member of the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
As he was described in his High School yearbook, Chief Summey was a true Southern Gentleman. He loved his family and was totally devoted to them always being there to help in any situation. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy, who passed away February 7, 2010; his parents; and three sisters, Willie Mae Witt, Tommy Opal Green and Gladys Ziegler.
Chief Summey is survived by his daughter, Beverly Gritter and husband, Kenneth; son, Les Summey and wife, Joan; grandchildren, Leslee Fletcher LaPolla and husband, Dominic, Veronica Warren and husband, Steve, Ty Summey and wife, Heather and Stacy Grabenstein and husband, Jason; great grandchildren, Keri, Giana, Tyler, Austin, Dylan, Eli and Dakota; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be his fellow firefighters of the Waco Fire Department.
