Lewis Duane McGuire, 86, of Waco,TX, passed away on July 1 at his home. A Memorial Service will be 2 P.M. on Friday, July 7 at Oakcrest Funeral Home with visitation at 1 P.M.

Lewis was born August 18,1936 in Knox County, TX to Valoise Cook McGuire and Lewis Glen McGuire.

He spent his childhood in Long Beach, CA, Liberator Village (Ft. Worth),TX and Gilliland, TX. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1961 began his career in city administration in Sundown,TX as director of Urban Renewal. He continued in that same role in Hearne, TX and later in Waco, TX. In Waco, he also served as Director of Housing and as an analyst in the Public Works department. Lewis joined the Army Reserve in college and continued to serve earning the rank of Sergeant First Class.

While in Hearne, TX Lewis was active in the Lions Club, serving as president. He belonged to Fidelis Lodge, and was a Shriner, spending several years playing trombone in the Shrine Band.

Lewis was a Methodist, belonging to churches in each town where he lived, including First Methodist and Central United Methodist in Waco.

Lewis met his future wife, Carol Sue Bertram at a college ice cream social at her parents house in Hobbs,NM. They were married in 1959, going on to have two daughters Susan and Angie.

Once retired, Lewis kept busy with a variety of activities with his wife Carol, including traveling by camper to every contiguous state and revisiting a pursuit he enjoyed in college, ballroom dancing. A lifelong lover of fishing, Lewis fished in many areas but especially enjoyed trips deep sea fishing along the Texas coast.

When out and about, Lewis was never without a hat on his head. Through the years he had amassed quite a collection, from which he would select a hat based on weather, occasion, or simply the mood he was in on that day.

Lewis enjoyed collecting various tools and loved to tinker and fix anything that was broken. Lewis was a gentle and kind man with a great sense of humor who loved to tell stories about things he had experienced in his life as well as family history of life on the prairie around Gilliland,TX. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis Glen and Valoise McGuire.

Lewis is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carol, daughter Susan and husband Gordon, daughter Angie and husband Jamie, grandsons Jordan, Connor, Douglas and Samuel, and sister Elise Martinez.
