Lillian Granger, known to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as “Nanny,” died on May 1, 2015, at the ripe-old-age of ninety-two. Carter Lillian Wood came into life on April 26, 1923, at Grandview in Johnson County, Texas. She was the 9th child and 6th daughter of Wiley Clifton and Mary Alice (Brown) Wood’s 11 children. During her early life her father was a tenant farmer and the family lived various places in Johnson, Ellis, Nueces and McLennan Counties. The family settled in Waco in the mid-1930's where her father found work with the WPA.

Lillian married William Radford “Dub” Granger, Jr. on June 15, 1940 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Waco. From this union were born three children: William David, Sharon Ann, and Mary Dawn. In 1980, after over 40 years of marriage, she was unexpectedly widowed. Lillian and Dub were members of the Beverly Hills Baptist Church.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son David, daughter-in-law Merry Pat Granger, son-in-law Frank Edward Nelson III, great-granddaughter Caitlyn Annabelle Nelson, and by her siblings Thomas Weldon Wood, Enolia Mae Coker, Delton Orvin Wood, Wilburn Cecil Wood, Lorene Curton, Lois Wyonia Freeman, Margaret Wilson Darwin, Nathan Lodeen Bradbury, and Herschel Clifton Wood.

She is survived by her baby sister Masie Ernestine Vance; daughters Sharon Ann Nelson of Waco, and Dawn Granger Segrest and husband John of Lorena; grandchildren David Bradley Granger and wife Angela, Dawn Denise Granger and husband James, and Christopher Nelson and wife Wendy, all of Waco, Nathan McBrayer Segrest and wife Heather of College Station, Amanda Leigh Dorris and husband Dustin of North Richland Hills, and Wm. Andrew Granger Segrest of Lorena; by 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter; and by many nieces, nephews and friends. She loved all of her family very much.

The family wants to thank the staffs of Lakeshore Village Healthcare Center and of Bluebonnet Hospice for their caring kindness. Special thanks goes to cousin Marsha Dowdle who along with daughters Sharon and Dawn attended to Lillian daily.

Lillian came from humble beginnings, grew up during the Great Depression, married young, and worked hard meeting the needs of her family. She knew great loss and greater love. She lived a long-long life but never made history. She leaves the good family which she nurtured with loving care as her only legacy.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given to Seventh & James Baptist Church, 602 James Ave., Waco, TX 76706.
