Lloyd Leighton Hontz, 87, of Waco, passed away Saturday, December 26, 2009.
His memorial service will be Saturday, January 2, at 11:00 am in Central Presbyterian Church, 9191 Woodway Drive, Waco, TX 76712 with the Rev. Charles Packard officiating.
Lloyd was born in Jim Thorpe, P A, and spent most of his life in Pennsylvania working for Western Electric and Bell Systems Lab in Allentown, Pa.
He was a jack of all trades and loved working with his hands. He and his family built 4 of the houses they lived in over the years. If it needed fixing, he could fix it. He loved bowling and playing golf. He was also a great storyteller and dreamer.
He was inducted into the Jim Thorpe Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 as a member of his Mauch Chunk, Pa. High School's undefeated Soccer team of 1939. He had a big heart and will be missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Ellamanda (Oppold) Hontz; sister, Grace Hamilton; and his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Irene Pelland Hontz.
He is survived by his son, Philip L. Hontz of Albequerque, NM.; daughter, Karen E. Hontz Groman and husband, David B. of Waco, TX; two grandchildren, Peter Groman and his wife, Michelle, of Irving, TX, and Mark Groman and his wife, Sandy of Elm Mott, TX; great-grandsons, Ashton Groman and Ryan Groman; great-granddaughters, Courtney Groman and Samantha Groman; two sisters, LaVerne Gallagher of Topton, PA and Ruth Smith of Brienigsville, P A; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick of Riegelsville, P A and Charlotte Mammana of Easton, Pa., and many special nieces and nephews.
The family thanks the staff of Providence Hospice and OakCrest Funeral Home for their care.
