Lucille was born in Merkle and was one of nine children. She was educated in Gholson and later married her husband Martin Hicks April 18, 1926 in China Spring. They were happily married for 47 years before his passing February 16, 1973. They had three children in China Spring and supported their young family by farming.
After a move to Waco in the early 1940s, Lucille worked at Wood Brothers Mfg. Company as a seamstress. She used her talents at home to create most of her daughters' clothes as they were growing up.
Lucille was blessed with a second love. She married Jim Darden in 1974 and enjoyed 17 years of marriage before he passed away February 28, 1991. They were world travelers and members of the Airstream Club. Their travels took them through much of the United States and also to Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, London, the Holy Land and Asia.
The guiding force throughout her life was her love for her Lord. She accepted Him into her life as a young girl and leaned on Him for the remainder of her life. Her daily witness to her family, friends and even strangers is a legacy that will be felt for years.
During her long, productive life Lucille served as a Sunday School teacher for 30 years in various local Baptist churches including Third Street Baptist, Memorial Baptist and Parklake Baptist. She served on many committees at Calvary Baptist Church. In her sunset years, she called the Western Heights Baptist Church her home.
She "adopted" many Baylor students over the years and fed them many homemade meals. She loved having a house full of college students on Sunday nights. She also chauffeured many neighbors and friends to church when they were unable. She provided this service into her early 90s.
Lucille delighted in her ever-growing family. She was happiest when surrounded by grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Over the years, she has enjoyed three generations of bouncing babies on her lap. She loved providing big meals for her family.
She will be remembered for her inspiring faith, her sweet smile and her determined spirit.
