Luther Leeray Lavender, better known as “Luke”, went to be with his Savior, Wednesday evening the 10th of October. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 13, 2012 at OakCrest Funeral Home with Dr. Ed Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Stanford Chapel Cemetery. Visitation with Mr. Lavender’s family will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.

Luke was born in Waco on July 16, 1928 to Luther Curtis and Edna Lavender. He attended Waco schools and graduated from Waco High in January 1946. Luke married his high school sweetheart, Nell Dick, on August 24, 1947. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Following school, Luke worked for Equifax for twelve years living in Bryan. Afterwards, Luke and Nell moved back to Waco where he began his thirty two year career with Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company. Luke was District Manager of the Waco office. Luke had been a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church since 1964 and a member of Dr. Ed Carter’s Friendship Sunday School Class for many years. He had a strong relationship with God and always had a song of praise to sing. Luke was a good friend to many and offered each encouragement in a humorous way.

Luke loved his family so much. His girls, including his wife, Nell, and daughters Brenda, Laura and Linda were the light of his life. According to his daughters, Luke was the greatest Dad any girl could have.

Luke was preceded in death by his parents, Luther Curtis and Edna Lavender; brother, Allen Lavender; and grandson, Spencer Mangum.

He is survived by his wife, Nell; daughters, Brenda Turner and husband, Charles, Laura Snowden and husband, Paul, Linda Friar and husband, David; brother, Wallace Lavender and wife, Jackie; sister, Mary Edna Gilbert; grandchildren, Seth and Jenni Mangum, Steven and Sarah Mangum and Brad and Andrea Turner; great grandchildren, Eli Mangum, Aric Mangum and Joley Turner; and many nieces, nephews and “adopted” family.

Pallbearers will be Paul Snowden, David Friar, his nephew, Richard Dick and his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are treasured friends, Bert DuBois, John Dodson and his son in law,Charles Turner.

The family gives many thanks to Greenview Manor Nursing Home and to Southern Care Hospice.
