Alfred Paul Bockman, 89, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco, Texas. He was born March 11, 1923 in Wabash, Indiana.
A Memorial service will be held on Friday, December 7, 2012 at Seventh and James Baptist Church, Waco, at 2:00 PM. Interment will be in Louisville, Kentucky at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery with a time yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can me made to Seventh and James Baptist Church.
Al lived in Wabash until the age of 10 when his father moved the family to Louisville, Kentucky during the depression. After graduating high school, he joined the US Army where he served with distinction for over twenty years, including as an Aide-de-camp to two generals. Major Bockman was a veteran of WWII, earning several medals, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was wounded during the Allied Invasion of Italy. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as friends and family will attest. After his military retirement in 1961, he worked as an engineer for NASA. He was particularly proud of his participation in the Lunar Rover Project for its maiden voyage to the moon. He continued his career in the aerospace industry with Lockheed Martin until his retirement.
Major Bockman is survived by his wife Lucille, sons Alfred Bockman, Jr., Lou Bockman, both of Houston, daughter Paula Bockman-Chato, of Sydney, Australia, brother Harry Bockman, sister Sarah Cohen, both of Louisville, KY, grandchildren Jon Paul Bockman of California and Steve of Connecticut, Hannah Chato, Aaron Chato of Sydney, Australia, and Elizabeth Bockman and David Bockman of Houston. He is also survived by stepsons Roy Nickell Jr., and wife, Marlene, Robert Nickell, and wife, Kathleen, Jack Nickell, and wife, Teri, Jeff Nickell, and wife, Rebecca, stepdaughter Nancy Davis, and husband, Ross, and numerous stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty, and his parents.
In his leisure time, Al enjoyed raising and showing his Saluki dogs, of which many medals were awarded. His other hobbies included rock collecting, jewelry faceting, stained glass, and bird watching.
