Margie Matyastik Barton passed from this life on May 17, 2015. Memorial service will be at Oakcrest Funeral Home on May 31, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. with Reverend Kip Osborn officiating.
Margie was born March 22, 1970, in Waco. She attended Waco schools and graduated from Waco High. Working as an aide at Mountain View Elementary she was lovingly called the “nurse” by students and staff.
She was the victim in a tragic auto accident on April 8, 1994, which caused severe burns over 75% of her body which resulted in amputation of both legs. Her courage in the face of adversity was an inspiration to all who knew her.
After a year of recuperation and adjustment to prosthesis, Margie resumed her education and earned degrees from McLennan Community College and Baylor University and later married December 30, 2000. She returned to Mountain View Elementary as a teacher. After the birth of her second child she left the classroom and stayed home to home school her children.
She was a skilled seamstress, she loved animals and the outdoors, and she had a “green thumb”. Activities she enjoyed with her family included camping, bicycling, dancing, water sports, and martial arts. Her motto was “if it is to be it is up to me.”
Strong in her Christian faith, Margie was baptized in First Baptist Church of Waco during her teen years. She attended Western Heights Baptist Church where her children actively participate in the youth and children’s programs.
She was Past Grand Love and Past Grand Treasurer of the International Order of the Rainbow of Girls and at the time of her death was serving as the Treasurer for the Waco Assembly Social Order of the Beauceant.
Her death was culmination of a valiant fight against squamous cell carcinoma, a cancer that developed as a result of the severe burns she suffered twenty-one years ago.
She is survived by her husband, Henry Barton; son, Otto; and daughter, Sophia Barton; parents, Bill and Maggie Matyastik of Waco; brothers, Bill Matyastik and wife, Jill of Arlington and Walter Matyastik and wife, Dana of Fort Worth; sisters, Margaret Baier of Waco, Nita Parsons and husband, Paul of Trinity, Linda Hutchings and husband, Joe of Waco, and Melissa Spann and husband, Jon of Lorena; and numerous nieces and nephews.
