Martha Jane Herring Denton, 83, of Waco, passed away Friday, October 29, 2004.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 3, at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Tom Robbins officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.
Martha was born in Dallas on December 12, 1920, to Henry and Faye Patty Herring. The family later moved to Hillsboro and she gradated from high school there. She received her BA degree from Texas Tech University in 1942. In her senior year there she was selected as a Texas Tech Beauty.
During World War II she moved to Waco where she met and married Dwight Parks. The marriage ended in a divorce. In 1956, she was married to Jack D. Denton and he preceded here in death in 1985. She was a longtime member of Austin Avenue United Methodist Church.
In the early 1970s, she became interested in the growing of herbs. She was a member of the National Herb Society and was the co-founder of the Waco Herb Society. She was past treasurer of the Henry Downs Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Junior League of Waco, the Waco Herb Society, and the Mary Milan Garden Club. She volunteered at the R.B. Hooner Library and was a volunteer member of the Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center Auxiliary. She enjoyed having the Baylor International students in her home during the holidays, and did this for many years. Her working experience included ten years at the Waco School Administration Building.
She is survived by a son, Mitchell Parks of Waco; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Clinger of Salt Lake City, and Mrs. Pat Anderson and husband, Barhow, of Houston; two nieces, Mrs. Martha Cooper and husband, Wally, of Salt Lake City, Mrs. Elaine Clyde and husband, Steve, of Salt Lake City; two nephews, Msgr. Jim Anderson of Houston, Phil Clinger and wife, Susan, of Salt Lake City; two cousins, Mrs. Ladene Stone of Dallas and Dr. Rugle Sowell of San Marcus, and a beloved pet, Puff.
