Marvin Wheat

“The measure of a father’s worth is his deeds and love he leaves behind for his family to remember.” Marvin (Buck) Wheat, Sr. of Waco, Texas left us on Monday, January 11, 2021. He went peacefully, ready to meet his Maker and join friends and family in heaven. He was born August 10, 1925 in Athens, Texas to Laurence B. and Johnnie Mae Wheat. He was one of 11 children and only a sister survives, Hazel Jayroe.

Growing up during the Depression, Buck helped support his family working hard at odd jobs and manual labor. He served in the U.S. Army as Private First Class and became a highly-decorated veteran awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Bronze Star.

Buck married Doris Marie Mathis (deceased) and together they raised a family of four, Marvin Samuel Wheat Jr. (deceased), Nelda Joyce Calloway, Susan Elaine Johnson, and Alan Dan Wheat. He has five grandchildren, Tisha Witt (Spouse, Michael Witt) Magan Theil (Spouse, Taylor Thiel), Caroline Carlson (Spouse, Derek Carlson), Joshua Wheat and Christopher Wheat. There are nine great-grandchildren, Zachary, Taylor and Jackson Witt, Kennedy & Stone Thiel, Mackenzie and Eloise Carlson and Preston and Brody Wheat.

He attended the Navarro Community College and after graduating joined the Texas Employment Commission where he spent a 33 year career. Upon retirement he made Waco his home. Later he married Nettie Mae Wheat and spent time traveling and exploring the US, being active in Grace Temple Baptist Church and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Buck will be remembered for his big smile, kind words and never missing an opportunity to be a friend. A service in his memory will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers or gifts, a donation to the Veteran’s Association would be greatly appreciated. The family appreciates Jason Featherston for his loyal friendship.
