Mary Alice O'Dowd, 97, of Waco, passed away Monday, August 30, 2004, in a local rehabilitation facility.

Private graveside services were held August 31, 2004 at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Jane Alro Osborne and Msgr. Mark Deering officiating.

Mary Alice was born June 20, 1907 in Live Oak, Milam County, Texas, to James Allen "J.A." Reaves and Ida Mae Reaves. She married M.M. "Mickey" O'Dowd and they celebrated more than 40 years of marriage until he preceded her in death in 1975.

Mary Alice was a homemaker and was a member of the Sterling C. Robertson Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas since 1954, serving in a number of chapter offices, including chapter President. She was also President General of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas from 1971-1973. She was also a charter member of the Waco-McLennan County Bar Auxiliary, serving as President from 1976-1977 and presented with the first "Award of Merit" ever given by the Auxiliary.

She was very active in the Historic Waco Foundation, having been a member of the Heritage Society of Waco (the forerunner of the present Foundation). She has been a member of the East Terrace Guild since the restoration began on the house and was honored with a Life Membership in the East Terrace Guild.

She assisted with the restoration of McCulloch House and served on that board from the beginning. She was also instrumental in getting the Silver Moon Rose declared the official flower and the Crep Myrtle the official tree of the City of Waco, and sold the Silver Moon roses for many years at the Brazos River Festival.

Mary Alice was also a longtime member of the Texas Historical Association, The Texas Historical Foundation, Texas Heritage Council, and the McLennan County Historical Commission, serving as the Marker Chairman of the Commission. She was a member of many other civic organizations too numerous to list.

Survivors include her son, M.M. (Mike) O'Dowd, Jr. and wife Janet N. O'Dowd; grandchild, Meredith O'Dowd of Dallas; sister-in-law, Judy Reaves; nephew, Walter M. (Skip) Reaves and wife DeeAnne and their children, Mika Michelle and Matthew Michael of West, Texas; and her niece, Ann O'Dowd Burney and her children, Ben and Becca of Western Texas.

Memorials may be made to the Historic Waco Foundation, Daughters of the Republic of Texas or to a Charity of choice.
