Masie Vance

Masie Vance, known affectionately to all as “Teenie,” died of natural causes at Waco, Monday, June 20, 2016. She was 88. Service will be 11 a.m., Thursday, at OakCrest Funeral Home with Rev. Matt Rosencrans of the 7th & James Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11 a.m., Thursday, prior to the service.

Masie Ernestine Wood Vance was born on March 7, 1928 near Waxahachie, Texas, the youngest of the 11 children of Wiley Clifton and Mary Alice (Brown) Wood.

The Woods were farm laborers who during the Depression moved often in search of work. Before age 7 Teenie was picking cotton alongside her siblings. This farming family finally put down roots in South Waco where Teenie attended school and grew into a beautiful young lady.

At age twenty-one Teenie married David G. Vance, a veteran of World War II who worked for Southwestern Bell in Dallas. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary shortly before David’s death in 2011. Teenie and David were Baptists. They lived in the Dallas area until moving to Wills Point in the mid-1980’s. Although they never had children, Teenie and David loved their many nieces and nephews as if they were their own. And they loved their dogs almost as much.

As an adult Teenie was not always well -- often struggling with her health, including an aneurism which almost killed her in the 1980’s. Although sometimes unpredictable in her mood and temperament she had a sweet soul, quick wit and accepting nature. She was content to take care of her husband when she could and truly appreciated everything folks did for her.

Following David’s death Teenie came to live at the Lakeshore Village Nursing Home in Waco, where she and her roommate--her big sister Lillian--developed quite a reputation with the staff who cared for and loved them both. Seldom a day would go by you wouldn’t hear tell of something “The Girls” had done, said, or threatened.

Teenie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and all of her siblings, brothers, Thomas Weldon “T.W.”, Delton Orvin “D.O.”, Wilburn Cecil, and Herschel Clifton Wood; and sisters, Lorene Curton, Enolia Mae Coker, Lois Wyonia Freeman, Margaret Wilson Darwin, Nathan Lodeen Bradbury, and Carter Lillian “Nanny” Granger.

Teenie is survived dozens of nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren; by sisters-in-law, ,Fern Thigpen Wood, Ida Vance Lane, and Marcella Dobecka Vance; and her daughters, Toni and Cynthia; by her niece, Linda Hamm and husband, Tracy; and by special nieces and nephews, Dawn and John Segrest, Sharon Nelson, Marsha and Thurman Dowdle, and Vicky Morris who visited and steadfastly cared for their Aunt Teenie.

To the staff of Lakeshore Village Healthcare Center and Bluebonnet Healthcare -- To Albert, Vickey, Chandra, Nancy, Judy, Debbie, Ashley, Robin, Passion, Molly, Tiffany, Missy and so many more – THANK YOU for your caring kindnesses in attending to our “Girls” above-and-beyond the call.

Memorials made to the 7th & James Baptist, 602 James Ave., Waco, TX 76706, or to the church or charity of your choice, are appreciated.
