Nothing in life was more important to Mom than her family and her friends. She cherished her friends from the "old neighborhood" and thought about them daily, longing for the days when neighbors visited and kids could catch fireflies into the night. She was involved with school events, the PTA, and was a chairperson for the March of Dimes during the 1950's and early 1960's. Her homemade pies were the first to be sold when our schools needed items for bake sales ; whether it be for charity, raising money for drill team trips or high school sports....everybody wanted "Melba's pies".
In her later years, Mom went to work as a receptionist for the Waco Independent School district where, over the course of 20 years, she made life long friends. We can still hear her answer the phone..."Waco schools, can you hold please?"
