elvin Rodgers of Waco passed away on Jun 18, 2014. Services will be Monday, June 23, 2014 at Oak Crest Funeral home with the Rev. Curtis Holland officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

Melvin Rodgers was born On May 30, 1920 in Groesbeck, TX to Willie and Mary Rodgers. He lived the first years of his life in Limestone and Falls County, before him and his family moved to Waco.

Melvin joined the Army on Feb. 27, 1941. He served in the COC 3113 Signal Service Division. He served in Iceland, Belgium, England, and France. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 13, 1945.

After returning home from the War, he met and later married Frances Baker. They were blessed with four children. He went to work for Standard Cigarette and Music Company. He worked there until his retirement at age 65.

He was an avid fisherman and loved nothing more than to go to the coast with his family camping and fishing. He never met a stranger, and loved to tell a good story.
He had a full life with many good stories. In his later life he would have coffee with his coffee buddies and they would all talk and tell stories.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances Rodgers; son, Mel Rodgers; grandson, Kristopher Safley; brother, James Warneke; and sister, Ruby Wallace.

Melvin is survived by his daughter, Linda Coleman; daughter, Ruby Rice and her husband, Troy; son, James Rodgers; daughter in law, Ellona Rodgers; sister, Billie Pearson; grandchildren, Mike Rodgers, Tammy Rodgers, Eric Coleman, Brian Rodgers, Kristi Hoffman and Nick Rodgers; and by his great granddaughter, Bridgit Rodgers.


The family would like to say a special Thank You to his good friend Everett Tindell. Not only was he a friend and coffee buddy, but he was often times a driver taking Melvin wherever he needed to go.
