MILDRED "lMICKI" MCKERN
August 29, 1920 - September 11, 2012.
Mildred (Micki) Jenkins McKern, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2012. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. Visitation with the family will be at 1:30 preceding the service.
Mildred was born August 29, 1920 near Denton, Missouri to Gomer and LillieMarie Jenkins. Micki graduated as valedictorian from Blairstown High School and attended Central State College in Warrensburg, MO on a scholarship. She taught school in a rural school in Missouri for three years and then went with her sister to Kansas City during World War II. She worked in an office at the US Military Knobnoster Arsenal during WWII. After the war, she worked in an office in a department store in Kansas City. She married Richard Lewis McKern December 23, 1950.
Her husband was transferred to Oklahoma City in 1957. She devoted her time
taking care of their two sons Kent Richard and Patrick Lewis. In 1973 her husband
opened the Yukon Paint and Carpet Store in Yukon, Oklahoma for her to manage.
She managed the business from 1973 until she sold it in 1984.
She loved to play bridge and taught bridge at the Harrison Senior Center after she
moved to Waco. She was baptized as a young adult at the Methodist Church in
Blairstown, Missouri. She and her husband were members of the Lutheran Church
in Oklahoma City and Yukon. She attended Sunday School at the Methodist
Church.
Micki was preceeded in death by her husband, Richard, on February 28, 1978; mother and father, Gomer and LillieMarie Jenkins of Urich, Missouri; brothers, Chester Jenkins, Ray Jenkins, Gomer Jenkins, Jr.; and sisters Maxine Koepke and Annabelle Brown.
She is survived by her two sons, Kent and wife, Ruthann McKern of Waco, Patrick
and wife, Kathleen McKern of Houston; sister-in-law, Marge Jenkins of Lees
Summit, Missouri; grandchildren, Meghan Applegate, Kennedy McKern, Connor
McKern, Christy McKern, Holly DeHaan, Scott McKern; one great-grandchild, Ian;
and a host of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Stillwell Teacher Retirement Center
in Waco.
