Milford Ray Springfield, 78, of Waco, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Western Heights Baptist Church, 6301 Bosque Blvd., Waco, with the Rev. Mike Patterson officiating. Eulogists will be Mitchell Parrish and Albert Treadway. Burial will follow in the Waco Memorial Park North. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque. A memorial video of his life will be shown during the visitation.
Milford was born September 11, 1927 in Lott to Cecil and Zoda (White) Springfield. He graduated in 1944 from Chilton High School. He married Dorothy Hicks on November 22, 1947 in Waco. He was a loving, wonderful father who had many close friends.
Milford was a generous, warm-hearted man who was a loyal friend. He lived his life as a devoted Christian, and was especially respected for reflecting his Christian values. He served as a director of deacons and superintendent of Sunday School at Memorial Baptist Church. He then joined Highland Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
Later, he was a deacon and a member of the Agape Sunday School Class at Western Heights Baptist Church where he was active until his health failed.
He will be fondly remembered most for his sharp wit and humorous storytelling. He also devoted his life to music and learned to play the piano at age 70. He sang in the church choirs and in the Baylor University Adult Senior Choir including an appearance at Myerson Symphony Hall in Dallas.
He served his community in several areas, including being a past president of the Lake Air Little Leagues, past Scout Master for the Mountainview Boy Scout Troop, past vice president of the Waco Jaycees, and past president of the Northwest Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the Masonic Fidelis Lodge 1127.
Milford worked at the William Cameron Division of Certain-Teed Corporation for 44 years, and installed one of the first IBM computer mainframe systems in Texas. He was also a former computer instructor at McLennan Community College.
He enjoyed researching history and traveling to various historical sites around the county. During the past few years he was a member of the Waco Parkinson Support Group.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy (Hicks) Springfield; two sons, Stephen Springfield of Dallas and Brian Springfield and wife, Mitzi, of Magnolia, Texas; two grandchildren, Britton and Kyle Springfield of Magnolia; sister, Virginia Reeves of Waco; mother-in-law, Lucille Darden of Waco; sisters-in-law, Betsy Wirtz and Judy Springfield; brother-in-law, Bob Hicks; and nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Richard Rosenauer, Leon Lebkowsky, Joe Walker, Sam Campbell, Mac Gorham, Ray Colclasure, and Paul Wagenschein. Honorary pallbearers will be Elwood Seith, John Black, and T.G. Smith.
The family especially thanks St. Catherine's, the members of our church, and our many friends for their prayers and support during his illness.
