Myrtle Ann Cates

Myrtle Ann Allaire Cates, 89, of Waco, lost her long struggle with Alzheimer's disease on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at her home, in the company of her family.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 21, at St. Louis Catholic Church with Father John Guzaldo as officiant. A rosary service led by Deacon Greg George will be 6 p.m. Friday, August 20 at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd., , with visitation to follow from 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Ann was born May 5, 1921, in Breckenridge, Texas, to J.S. Allaire and Mary Margaret Dodge. She graduated Leveretts Chapel High School in Overton, Tex., and subsequently attended Draughon's Business College in Lubbock Texas.
When World War II broke out, she entered the Civil Service and was employed at the Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington D.C. In November 1943, she married Lt. Aubrey Cates, U.S. Army Air Corps B24 pilot, prior to his shipping out to England. Upon his return, they started a family, and she decided to devote her time to her children and husband. The family moved from San Angelo to Waco in 1968.
In her early years, Ann enjoyed participating in community activities and was active in her church and the garden club. She was a very talented artist, painting landscapes and ocean scenes which she shared with family. Ann and Aubrey moved to Houston in 1974, where she was employed by Pier 1. She and her husband returned to Waco in 1980.
Ann is survived by her husband, Aubrey; daughter, Mary Angela Cates of Dallas; sons, Larry and his wife, Colleen of Dallas, Michael and his wife, Jenny of Roanoke, Va. and Steve and his wife, Darlene of Waco, and her sister Mary Sanford and husband Billy Ray. She also leaves 16 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Chris Cates, Curtis Cates, Neil Massey, Don Andretta, Erik Woodling, Brian Emerson, and Brandon McDonald. Honorary pallbearer will be Jacob Cates.
The family expresses a special thank you to Providence Hospice and to Ann's private nurses for their care of her.
