Mrs. Claire Frederick Miller , 96, of Waco, who was born Nell Colgin on January 18, 1911 in Waco to Dr. and Mrs. Merchant William Colgin, Sr., died peacefully on Wednesday, December 26, 2007.
The funeral will be held on Monday, December 31st at 11:00 a.m. at The First Presbyterian Church in Waco with the Reverend Jimmy Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 30th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.
After graduating from Waco High School in 1928, Nell attended Sweet Briar College and graduated in 1933 with a B.A., from the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.
After returning from a Grand Tour to Europe, she met and married Dr. Claire F. Miller of Marlin in 1934. They moved to Hobbs, New Mexico for four years where they added two children to the family. The family moved back to Waco in 1941.
Nell was a lifelong member of The First Presbyterian Church of Waco, where she taught a Bible class and Sunday school and sang in the choir.
She was active in many civic organizations including the Gardeners, Friday Forum (founding member), The Junior League of Waco, American Red Cross and Waco Historical Society.
Nell treasured the time spent with her grandchildren and great-granddaughters. Nell's loving and generous spirit and cheerful personality will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
Nell was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Claire F. Miller; son, Claire Frederick Miller, Jr.; siblings, Dr. Merchant Colgin and wife Julia and Dr. James Colgin of Waco and Elizabeth Colgin Watson and husband Reginald Watson of Dallas.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Miller Swift and husband Stanley Hill Swift, Jr. of Waco; sister in law, Roberta Colgin of Waco; grandson, Stanley Hill Swift, III and wife Mary; granddaughter, Elizabeth Swift Copeland and husband Morgan; great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Sentell Swift, Sarah Dossett Swift, Nell Elizabeth Copeland, Kate Morgan Copeland and Carson Carlyle Copeland, all of Houston.
Pallbearers will be Mercer Merchant Buchanan, James Carter Colgin, John B. Fisher, III, Danny Joe Jackson, Ullin Whitney Leavell, III, Eugene R. Perry, Ronald Wayne Taylor and Nicholas Ord Watson.
