Orba Lee Malone, 82, a well known attorney and community leader in El Paso and a former Waco resident, passed away Friday, June 27, 2003, in El Paso.

SERVICES
Funeral services will be held Monday morning in El Paso at the First Baptist Church of El Paso. The graveside service at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco. Dr. Levi Price and Dr. Foy Valentine will officiate.

VISITATION
Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Robert B. Sloan Jr. Teaching Chapel at the George W. Truett Theological Seminary, Third and Dutton Streets, on the Baylor University campus. Services are under the direction of OakCrest Funeral Home of Waco.

PERSONAL / PROFESSIONAL LIFE
Born in Milo in the Texas panhandle on August 2, 1920, he was the oldest male of nine children. He attended Wayland College in Plainview, and graduated from Baylor School of Law in 1942. He married Peggy Pounds on April 23, 1943. She preceded him in death in 1989. He was also preceded in death by his son Paul in 1980.

At 31 years of age, Mr. Malone became the youngest-ever member of the Baylor University Board of Trustees.

He was an early advocate for racial integration and led in Baylor's admittance of the first black student/athlete in the Southwest Conference in 1964.

Mr. Malone, who practiced law in El Paso from 1947 to 1994, served on several boards, including the El Paso Independent School District board and the Child Welfare Board of El Paso County.

He was also a founding director and vice president of the Lee and Beulah Moor Children's Home's board of trustees, which he served on from 1947 to 2003.

"As an original member of the board, his leadership contributed to much of the success of where we are today," said Randy Rankin, president and CEO of the Lee and Beulah Moor Children's Home.

He was a first lieutenant in the Air Force, where he piloted a B-29 on 25 missions to Japan during World War II. In 1963, Malone returned to Japan as a lay preacher as part of a group of Baptist ministers and laymen.

He was extremely active in both Texas and Southern Baptist life, chairing the Christian Life Commission of both the Southern Baptist Convention in 1965 and the Baptist General Convention of Texas in 1967.


SURVIVORS
Survivors include his wife. Lillian McMurry Malone; his children, John Malone of Waco, David Malone of Austin, Carol Lorence of Shreveport, La., and Dan Malone of El Paso, seven brothers and sisters, and 11 grandchildren.
