Martha Ellen "Pat" Currie Armstrong, age 102, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2007. Services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, April 13, at Church at Tree Lake, 11519 China Spring Highway, with Bro. Jeff Wyers, pastor of Church at Tree Lake, and her nephew, Dr. Joe Dufner, pastor of Forest Branch Baptist Church, Livingston, Texas, officiating. Burial will follow in Waco Memorial Park by OakCrest Funeral Home.

Pat was born January 10, 1905, near Weches, Texas. She was the third of nine children born to Maggie Mae (McKnight) and Ed Currie. At the age of seventeen, Pat left the family farm in Limestone County and moved to Houston to attend business school. She worked as PBX operator for the law firm, Fulbright, Crooker, Freeman, Bates, and Jaworski from 1930 until her marriage on February 13, 1943, to Angus Preston Armstrong, whom she met in the choir at Broadway Baptist Church. After World War II, Angus and Pat became charter members of a new church plant, Woodridge Baptist Church.

The Armstrongs moved to Fort Worth in 1953, where they were members of University Baptist Church. Pat served in various capacities, including Sunday School teacher, Women's Missionary Union leader, and Married Seminary Department Director. They opened their home to many students and young people starting their careers. Pat was famous for her dinners for large gatherings of family and friends and the many pictures she took of her loved ones. In 1980, they moved to Waco. Pat was a member of Henry Downs Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and Church at Tree Lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband on January 27, 1992, and by her four brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen and husband James Gilchrist, step-son, Glen Armstrong and wife BeBe of Sherman; grandchildren: Jim Gilchrist and wife Janet, their daughters, Stephanie, Catherine, and Rebecca, Martha Gilchrist and husband John Roundtree, their daughters, Naomi and Olivia, and Preston Gilchrist and wife Lauren, and their son Graham; step-grandchildren, Ruth and husband John Johnson of Asheville, N.C., Don Armstrong and wife Suzi, Mark Armstrong and wife Kerry, of Champaign, Ill., Steve Armstrong and wife DeDe of Oak Point, Texas, Tobi and husband Kenneth Benton of Ogden Utah, and Shann Schubert and husband Darrah Dunn, 26 step-great grandchildren, and 4 step-great-great-grandchildren; 4 nieces, 4 nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Hospice, the Salvation Army, or Church at Tree Lake Building Fund.
