Paul L. Allen
August 23, 1927- September 17, 2015
Paul L. Allen, of Waco, passed away on September 17, 2015. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at OakCrest Funeral Home 4520 Bosque Boulevard, Waco. Friends are welcome to come by the funeral home Saturday, Sept. 19 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to pay their respects. Funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, at St. Louis Catholic Church, 2001 N 25th Street, Waco. A procession will leave the church at approximately noon for burial at the Hamilton IOOF Cemetery, Hamilton TX.
Paul was born August 23, 1927 to Joe Bailey and Callie Mae Allen in Hamilton, Texas. Paul was preceded in death by Joe Bailey Allen (father), Callie Mae Allen (mother), Joe Bailey Allen II (brother), William R. Allen (brother), and Bobby G. Allen (brother). Other remaining family members include: Marjorie Allen, Joe Bailey Allen III, Randy Jenkins and Barbara Halbert. Paul was the oldest living Allen In the history of the Allen family.
Paul had polio as a young boy at the age of five and his mother Callie Mae stayed up with him day and night for two weeks and kept him alive. His father, Joe Bailey Sr. died when he was 10 and Callie Mae raised four boys by herself during the depression. The family’s house burned down when Paul was 12 and they temporarily lived in a three sided livestock barn. Paul’s oldest brother Joe Bailey died in heavy active combat in Guam during WWII in 1944. After Paul graduated from high school at age 17 he joined the Merchant Marines and entered into WWII and served until the end of the war. He Joined the Army in 1950 and served as a Corporal in the Korean War and was involved in heavy active combat. Upon his return, Paul joined the Texas Highway Patrol in 1952 and served for 35 years and retired as a Lieutenant while serving Waco. While Paul was a Sergeant in Bryan he was a major player in saving a highway patrol officer who was kidnapped in the early 1970’s, in which there was later a movie made about it called The Sugarland Express.
He met Violet J. Gondek in 1950 and they were married six weeks later on September 16, 1950. They were married for 65 years and she was the Love of his Life! Paul and Violet owned two farms in their lifetime together, one outside of Bryan and one outside of Waco. They loved going and working on their farms and feeding their cows together! Paul was one tough cookie and it was always said he did it his way!
Paul is survived by his wife of 65 years, Violet; sons, Paul L Allen II and Robert S Allen; Roberts’s wife, Vickie; grandchildren, Jill Ingle, Tiffany Boeglin, Brad Allen, Marcy Allen; and four great grandsons, Jayden, Drew, John Paul and Chase. Paul loved his family dearly and always took care of them!
Pallbearers, all members of the Texas Dept. of Public Safety, will be Danny Smith, Walter Peterson, Roger Kucera, Bobby Harpole, Lee Smith and Bill Maley.
