Peggy Batson

Peggy Joyce Batson, 87, of Waco, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2015, in Sulphur Springs. The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at Waco Memorial Park with Derek Moffatt and Blake Batson, her grandsons, officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Boulevard.
Peggy was born on July 12, 1927 in Luling, to Ray and Ester (Lehmann) Bailey. She had one brother, Ray Bailey, Jr. Peggy loved growing up in small town Luling where her parents owned the Luling Newsboy.

She participated in many high school activities, and worked for the Newsboy as a column writer. She graduated from Luling High School in 1944.

Peggy enrolled in Baylor University to continue her education during WWII. She met and married returning soldier, George Batson, in 1946. They had three children: Suzy, Mike, and Mark. Peggy finished her education from Baylor in 1956, majoring in Elementary education with minors in Spanish and Journalism.

She was a long time educator in the Waco public schools and in China Springs. She began her career in Riesel, Texas, then years in Waco at Sul Ross, North Waco, and Brook Avenue. She taught 4th and 6th grade, as well as elementary Spanish. She finished her career at China Springs Elementary.

George and Peggy were members of Highland Baptist Church where they were leaders of an adult Sunday School class for over 40 years. Peggy organized many events for the close knit members of their class.

The most enduring has been the weekly domino game, originally instigated by George to entertain the men. Over the years, Peggy had to fill in, and then took over! Now the faithful continue. Peggy has a reputation of winning, which her family and friends will readily attest to.

Peggy spent her last year with her daughter Suzy in Sulphur Springs, walking as usual, and playing dominoes. She was known everywhere for her fun personality and her "take charge" mentality. She is dearly loved by her family and friends, and will be missed by all. She leaves a legacy of faith in Jesus Christ, a servant's heart, a joyful spirit, and a love of people.

She was preceded in death by husband George and sons, Michael and Mark Batson.
She is survived by one daughter, Suzy Moffatt and her husband Bubba from Sulphur Springs. Also she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Joanne Batson from Waco. Her grandchildren are Derek Moffatt and wife Jennifer from Crowley, Jared Moffatt and wife Amy from Van, Blake Batson and wife Kimberly from Waco, Jordan Batson and wife Jessie from Tyler, and granddaughter Christen Batson from Waco. She has seven great grandchildren: Aidan, Hope, and Grant Moffatt, and Jayton, Mason, Austin, and Jaxon Moffatt. She leaves one very loved niece, Nancy Bailey Ingram and husband Gary of Austin, and one very loved nephew Trey Bailey and his wife Mickie from Luling, along with all of their children.
