Peggy Joyce Rappe Young passed away on Tuesday morning, May 22, 2007 in a Waco hospital.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, at the Crawford Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Yarborough officiating. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, at Oak Crest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. A memorial video honoring her life will be shared during the visitation time.
Peggy Joyce Rappe Young - what a woman! Born June 14, 1938 in Waco to Morris and Rosa Lee Rappe, Peggy grew up in the Waco and Bellmead area. She graduated from LaVega High School in 1956.
Although they knew of each other in high school they did not date until Yoeman James D. Young, whisked her off her feet in a one week romance while back in Bellmead on military leave. They married Dec. 14, 1956. They moved to Alexandria, VA where James continued his Coast Guard service. Before returning to Texas they gave birth to a daughter, LaDonna Gail.
After returning to Texas Peggy went on to "earn" the first of two degrees from Texas A&M. Although Peggy was never enrolled as a student, she worked to see James graduate Class of '58 and LaDonna in the Class of '78.
James and Peggy made their home in Dallas, Texas for more than 30 years before returning to the Waco area.
While in Dallas, Peggy's business career ranged from secretarial positions at Texas Instruments and numerous law offices. In the mid-70s she began work in the title business, ultimately retiring as a Vice President from American Title Company in 1996. She was a mentor to many young women entering the industry.
Throughout her life Peggy shared James' love of flying – actually James loved planes and flying and Peggy loved James. They had a 50/50 partnership in the two experimental aircraft that James built.
The partnership terms were simple, James could buy anything he needed for the planes as long as he could afford to buy one for him and one for Peggy. In reality his would be radios or aircraft wings and hers' would be jewelry or furniture. Those were the rules and it worked well for both.
Peggy is survived by her husband, James Darrell, her daughter and son-in-law LaDonna and Benton Hagler of Waxahachie, her two sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy and Arnold Reed of Axtell and Pat and Joe Carter of Waco as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Throughout her illness Peggy has maintained her infectious joy of life. During the past 10 years Peggy and her family have been blessed by the support of numerous Caregivers and Medical Professionals. To them all the entire family expresses their appreciation.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made in Peggy's honor to one of the following: Crawford Cemetery Association, 3682 Prairie Chapel Rd., Crawford 76638 or Park Lake Baptist Church, 3701 N 27th Street, Waco, Tx 76708
