Phyllis was born on March 8, 1931 in Rosebud, Texas to Benjamin and Olga Reichle. After she graduated from Waco High School in 1948, she worked as an executive secretary for Texas Power and Light where she met her husband, Walter Earl Manske of McGregor. They married in March, 1955, at First Lutheran Church, the church Phyllis attended growing up and where she taught Sunday School.
In 1959, Phyllis and Walt moved to Farmers Branch, Texas, where they raised their daughters, Sharon and Diane. She was the leader of her daughters’ Brownie and Girl Scout troops and cherished the time she spent taking her girls to and supporting all their activities. Phyllis served as president of the Farmers Branch Civic League and the Jayceettes and volunteered at the Farmers Branch Public Library, which was later named for Walter Manske after his death. Phyllis and Walt were members of Christ United Methodist Church, where they both taught Sunday School. Phyllis was later an active member of Grace Bible Church.
Phyllis moved back to Waco in 1982 where she once again worked for TP&L, now Oncor. After she retired, Phyllis spent her time helping with Awanas at Alliance Bible Church, where she was a member, and cherished her time as a reading volunteer in the Waco public schools, especially helping out in Mrs. Abbot’s class. She was also a long- time volunteer at and a supporter of Mission Waco.
Phyllis was known for her hospitality, hosting large gatherings of family, friends, and church groups in her home. She was an excellent cook, avid reader, accomplished amateur painter, talented gardener, and a prolific seamstress. Most of all, she was a devoted and loving mother of two grateful daughters, a cherished grandmother, and beloved great-grandmother.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Walt, in 1973.
She is survived by her daughters, Sharon and husband, Jim Wolfe of Lorena; Diane and husband, Donald York of Austin; her sister, Olga Ann Baird of Farmers Branch; her grandchildren, Sara Mabile, Katie and Kyle Blevins, Christian York, Cameron York, Justin and Amanda Wolfe, Morgan and Kevin Sauer, and Jayme and Brittany Wolfe. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Addison and Grayson Mabile, Annie and Sammie Blevins, Ainslee and Colton Sauer, and Bentley and Tinsley Wolfe.
Graveside services will be held at the McGregor Cemetery Monday, July 19 at 11:00 with Jimmy Dorrell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mission Waco or the charity of your choice in Phyllis’ name.
