After a long and fulfilling life, Rachel LaVerne Moss, 96, of Mount Calm, Texas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 21, 2024. She was born to Joel Wesley Gauntt and Eunice Irene Deason Gauntt, in Kaufman County, Texas on June 16, 1928. Her parents, brothers, and sisters, as well as her husband of 62 years, Lawrence Moss, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 26, 2024, at OakCrest Funeral Home in Waco, Texas at 1:00 pm. Visitation with the family will be the hour preceding the service. Burial will follow the service at Waco Memorial Park.
By the time she was 25, LaVerne had finished public school in 10 years, worked for a defense contractor in California for WWII, married Lawrence, and was raising four children.
As she raised their children, LaVerne became very involved in the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) and her church. She was very proud of her lifetime membership in the PTA. As her children became successful in their chosen fields, LaVerne was very happy and celebrated their successes, especially the arrival of grandchildren.
At age 51, LaVerne entered the nursing program at McLennan Community College. After earning her nursing license, she was hired at a local hospital in Hubbard, Texas. Nursing was her calling and one of the many things in which she excelled. After the Hubbard Hospital closed, the Mosses took many trips with friends and family to gospel singings, Walt Disney World, Nashville, Branson, and to wherever the grandchildren were.
After their children were grown, Lawrence and LaVerne moved to Mount Calm. Their farm provided a place for family and friends to gather and grandchildren to play. Her grandchildren loved her dearly and thought she was the perfect Granny. She set down roots in the community, made lifelong friends, connected with maternal family, and became very active in the First Baptist Church of Mount Calm. Her life was changed forever when she lost her husband in 2008. While never complaining, she had several medical setbacks in the later years of her life. She faced these difficult times with a smile, which will be sorely missed.
LaVerne leaves a large family that already misses her sorely. Her family includes 3 sons and a favorite daughter: Dwain and Jeanie Moss of Waco, Jimmy (JD) Moss of Granbury, Mike Moss of Mount Calm and Connie and Danny Guinn of Cedar Hill. There are nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Granny’s Pallbearers will be her male grandchildren: Chris Moss, Greg Moss, Kevin Moss, Matt Guinn, Mike Moss, Nic Maucieri, Scott Moss, and Randall Brown.
Memorial donations may be made to The LaVerne Gauntt Moss Scholarship at McLennan Community College or to First Baptist Church Mount Calm, TX.
