Raleigh Duane Southwell, 82, of Waco, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2006 at the Wesley Woods Alzheimer's Center. Memorial service will be 10am Monday in the Chapel at OakCrest Funeral Home , 4520 Bosque, Waco, Texas.
Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 5pm at OakCrest.
Mr. Southwell was born September 15, 1923 in Cameron, Texas to Robert Payne and Margaret (Schmid) Southwell. After graduating from Waco High School in 1942, he proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as quartermaster.
He married Aletha Grace Vinson August 24, 1946 in Waco. He worked in Civil Service for the Veteran's Administration from 1946 until his retirement in 1978.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
Raleigh was an elder in the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waco, and was a Boy Scout leader.
He was a generous and warm hearted man, and enjoyed camping ,fishing, and was a great football fan.
His family fondly remembers him as a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who was a talented fix-it man and a lover of cats. No man ever loved and cared for his family more than Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Jones and a brother, Edwin Southwell.
Raleigh is survived by:
his wife, Aletha, of Waco;
son, Stephen Duane Southwell and wife, Donna, of Waco and their children, Kara Lynda, Kasey Leigh, and Landon Carson Southwell; daughter, Susan Patrice Hauser and husband, Vincent, of Austin, and their children, Exer Marie, Adele Rose and Johanna Kate Hauser;
brothers, Robert Southwell and Billy Joe Southwell, both of Waco;
and sister, Margaret Morgan of Waco.
The family will be at the homes of Steve Southwell and LuOuida Phillips.
The family especially thanks the staff at Wesley Woods in Waco and the Barton House in Austin, as well as Dr. Gary Barbin of Waco.
