Robert (Bob) William Jung
February 4, 1922 to November 28, 2007
Robert (Bob) William Jung, 85, passed away November 28, 2007 at a local hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 1, at 10 a.m. at St. Louis Catholic Church with Mgsr. Mark Deering as the celebrant. Burial with full military honors from the Dyess Air Force Base will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The rosary will be recited on Friday, November 30, at 6 p.m. at the OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque, followed by visitation with the family.
Bob was born in Fredericksburg, Texas on February 4, 1922 to Edwin H. and Dora (Kunz) Jung. He married Evelyne French on November 4, 1947 in San Antonio, Texas.
After high school, he worked on local ranches until joining the Air Force on September 17, 1942 at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and retired as Senior Master Sergeant in 1963. After retiring from the military, he worked for the Southland Corporation as a store manager for 20 years.
He was proud to be in the 77th Fighter Squadron and to be a part of the World War II Normandy Invasion. He completed Basic Military Training at Hammer Field, California and was assigned to the 20th Fighter Group, 77th Fighter Squadron, Payne Field, Washington. While assigned to this unit Sergeant Jung completed the Engineering Operations Course at Fort Collins, Colorado.
Sergeant Jung was transferred along with the 20th Fighter Group to England until October 1945 at which time he returned to the United States and was assigned to Lackland Air Force Base, Texas as an Administrative Technician. From 1949 to 1955 Sergeant Jung was assigned to Aviation Cadet Selection and Recruiting Duty at San Antonio and Fredericksburg, Texas. In June 1955, he was transferred overseas to Iceland where he served as Administrative Supervisor until May 1956. From May 1956 to November 1958, Sergeant Jung was assigned to the 450th Fighter Day Wing, Foster Air Force Base, Texas. In November 1958, Sergeant Jung was reassigned to Headquarters Twelfth Air Force with duty as First Sergeant of the 450 1st Support Squadron. He served in this capacity until his retirement from active military service.
He was a member of the Central Texas Rifle and Pistol Club and served as groundskeeper and safety officer as well as being an active competitor in IPSC/USPSA since 1984. He liked hunting and fishing and was a competitive pistol shooter. He was a loving and devoted husband and father, loyal to family, work, and military; and when assigned a task he would give 100% effort.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Michael and Thomas; a son, Jack Edwin Jung; and a daughter, Sheila Ann Hewitt.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyne M. Jung; son, Russell Jung of Los Alamos, NM; two daughters, Cynthia Bellringer of China Spring and Sandra Light of Hewitt; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Margaret Nixon and husband, Clarence of Fredericksburg, Agnes Blanchard of Fredericksburg, and Carolyn Hardin and husband, Carroll of Round Rock, Texas.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jim Patton and Bill Goodwyn.
