Roger Davis, 66, of Hewitt, passed away on Tuesday, December 16 at Providence Hospice House with his wife Lynne at his side after a battle with complications of pneumonia. He was cremated and returned to his home and family.
Roger was born September 20, 1948, to Drs. Phil and Joyce S. Davis in Dallas, a part of an extremely close and extended family. He lived several places, but he grew up in Houston and graduated from Westbury High School in 1966. He attended Baylor University where he met his future wife Lynne Barber. They married in January of 1969. After working several jobs, being drafted into the US Army, and doing a tour of Vietnam from March of 1970 to February of 1971, he returned to Baylor in 1973 to finish his BBA in 1974. He then went on to earn his MBA in 1976. He also worked fulltime at the McLennan County juvenile detention center while he was in school. He taught at Baylor for a year until he was accepted to Harvard Business School to work on a doctorate in 1977.
Roger was on the faculty of the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor for almost 35 years, mostly as a Senior Lecturer in the Marketing Department. He also taught in the MBA program and the EMBA program, both of which he loved to teach. He received the Hankamer Teaching Excellence Award in 1992 and he was extremely proud of it.
Roger was an educator who loved what he did, whether in the classroom, at home with his children and grandchildren, at breakfast with his cronies, or any time. Friends, stranger, anyone who would listen – Roger wanted to teach them something. In addition, he was always available to help anyone in need. He was well-respected by all and he was a kind-hearted and compassionate man who had friends from every walk of life. He had many interests over the years – fishing, golf, cooking, reading, music and playing games with his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother Dr. Scott Davis, and his mother, Dr. Joyce S. Davis.
Roger is survived by his wife and partner of almost 46 years Lynne Barber Davis of Hewitt; son Shane Davis of Quincy, Massachusetts; daughter, Kelli Davis of Hewitt; grandson Canyon Kafer of Bedford; granddaughter Aleyna Kettrey of Hewitt. He is also survived by his father Dr. Phil Davis of Austin, sister Diane Davis and partner Janice Edds of Lago Vista, brother Dr. Mark Davis and wife Barby of San Angelo, and sister-in-law Denise Davis of Waco. There are also more than a few beloved nieces and nephews.
We were not ready, but we loved him enough to let him go.
A Remembrance Celebration of his life will be held on Monday, January 5, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel at Oakcrest Funeral Home. Please come and tell your favorite Roger story.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the MS Society or the MS Association, Fuzzy Friends Rescue, the Waco Humane Society, Planned Parenthood, or the charity of your choice.
