Roy D. Wauson passed away at home among those who loved and cared for him during a long and painful illness.
A memorial and celebration of his life will be at the OakCrest Funeral Chapel, Waco, Texas on April 29, 2006 at 2 pm, Rev. Michael O. Patterson; Western Heights Baptist Church and family members will lead in the service.
Visitation will be held at the family home, 2013 Sugg, Waco, from 6pm ? 8pm. on Friday April 28, 2006.
Roy was born on October 5th 1930 in Plains, Texas to R. B. and Hattie Wauson. His family also included three brothers and two sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers R.B. Wauson, Jr. and Elvis Ray Wauson.
After his preliminary training in local schools, Roy enrolled in Howard Payne University at Brownwood, Texas where he also played football.
There he met and married Joanne Humber and began a beautiful 52 year marriage. Early in the marriage Roy served in the Army for two years. He was called and served in Korea in the war zone. While in the service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the U.N.
Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. Following his release from the service, he returned to Joanne in Brownwood so he could complete his degree.
For 33 years Roy taught math, coached several sports and served as principal at several Texas schools including Troy, Dimmitt, Frost, Palacios and retired from Menard ISD in 1986. In 1991 he was inducted into the Texas Tennis Association Hall of Fame as an outstanding tennis coach! His plaque is now in the Sports Hall of Fame in Waco.
In 1992 he and his wife moved to the Waco area.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne and children: Larry & Audrey Wauson in Waco; Patricia & John Dickerson in Castle Rock, Colorado; Marc & Sue Wauson in San Antonio; and his grandsons: Kerry & Rebecca Wauson in Houston; Robert Wauson, James Wauson and Joseph Wauson in Waco. They were the lights of his life. He is also survived by his sisters: Ita Grigsby of Lubbock, Texas and Doris & Rufus Rush of Irving, Texas and his brother James & Johnnie Wauson of Plains, Texas. He will be missed by his sister-in-law Mary Dorrow of New Braunfels, Texas and brother and sister-in law Bruce and Dorothy Neatherlin of Waco, Texas, plus numerous nieces, nephews and life long friends.
The family would like to thank Amanda "a true angel" and the staff at the Providence Home Health Care for their care and concern. Entombment will be at the Waco Memorial Mausoleum at a private family gathering.
